Mexico Overview

Diversity is the word that best describes Mexico's people and geography. Over 50 different indigenous groups, each with its own language, comprise 28% of Mexico's 83 million inhabitants. Divided by the Tropic of Cancer into the temperate North and the tropical South, the country boasts snow-capped volcanoes, jungle clad beaches, deserts, archeological ruins, modern cities, upscale resorts, and isolated villages.

Ancient Ruins: Tulum, Coba, Uxmal & Chichen Itza - Tulum (only Mayan site on the coast), Coba (located in the jungle), Uxmal (a timeless tribute to the Mayan stonemasons) and Chichen Itza (impressive pyramids) are all in the Yucatan Peninsula.

Cozumel & Isla Mujeres - Two breathtaking islands known for great snorkeling and scuba diving amongst spectacular coral reefs.

Xcaret - An "Eco Theme Park" that offers various forms of water activities, wildlife exhibitions and cultural performances. Visitors can go swimming with dolphins, visit Mayan ruins and museums, hike through the jungle and enjoy a show at the "Gran Tlachcho" theater.

Dolores Hidalgo - The town is of great historical significance; Father Hidalgo gave the "grito" of independence right there by the church in the central Plaza. A small, elegant, thoroughly Mexican town with graceful churches and locally made ceramics.

Valenciana Silver Mine and Church - The city hosts one of the most extraordinary churches in Mexico and the intriguing Mummies Museum. The mine was the richest in Mexico for hundreds of years.

Teotihuacan & Cuicuilco - Teotihuacan in the Valley of Mexico was the largest political and religious center of pre-Columbian Mesoamerica. The most important structures are the Pyramid of the Sun (tallest in ancient America) and the Pyramid of the Moon. Cuicuilco is the first home of the people who built Teotihuacan.

Uruapan - Located on the Tarascan Mountain range, Uruapan's cool climate is the perfect setting for camping. Tzararacua is a 100-foot-high waterfall that is located just minutes away.

Paricutin Volcano - This volcano erupted for the first time in 1943, completely covering the nearby town, except for the church's steeple. Take a fascinating horseback ride to volcano's base.
